Have You Ever BINGED?

Dear Reader,

I stumbled upon a blog that I have to share.  Especially since this latest post can really resonate with practically everyone. It is written about emotional eating vs. true hunger.  Every one (I was going to qualify this with every one who has…, but truly, I believe everyone.period.) can probably relate to this and even pin point exact moments in their own life.

Her post is titled: The Intersection of Nutrition and Mental Health and here is my favorite paragraph:

Acceptance is often a difficult concept for many to understand because we are taught from a very young age to do something about our ‘negative’ feelings to make ourselves feel better. But the fact is, feeling sad, lonely, scared, vulnerable, etc, are all NORMAL feelings. Everyone feels them at times regardless of how happy they seem on Facebook.

I urge you to read the entire post.

I remember, a few years back, I read that book that was pretty popular called “Women, Food and God“.  That book made me aware that I am an emotional eater in certain circumstances.  That is something that I wouldn’t have admitted before reading that, because I didn’t REALIZE IT.  It was eye-opening in that way for me.

It’s kind of hard for us to admit.

I have eaten an entire sleeve of Oreo cookies when I’ve been anxious.  The irony is that when I’m truly down, I don’t eat at all.

It’s a very specific emotion that causes me to do it and honestly, just knowing that helped me!  Anytime I have high anxiety now, I turn to foods that aren’t going to pile on the bad feelings on top of the bad feelings.  I am not sure this is the “correct” way to deal, but it’s how I’ve dealt with it.

I give myself permission to eat an entire bag of carrots or a whole cucumber, plus a whole bag of carrots, plus a bag of trail mix and then a kind bar… The point is, the food isn’t going to make me feel worse.  It’s natural and digestible, not inflammatory, sugary and greasy.  The worst feeling in the world is when it’s over and you have a gut full of crap.

Feelings Welcome.
